Supervisors

What is a Supervisor?

Supervisors are adult volunteers who supervise both practice and qualifying Adventurous Journeys.

Supervisors must be highly competent in the activity/form of journey they are supervising, and meet any applicable compliance/license/qualification requirements. During and after the practice journey(s) the Supervisor must provide feedback on the team’s strengths and weaknesses and what areas of concern regarding planning, skill, physical condition, equipment or team work that need to be addressed.

Please note: In most cases supervision should take place at a distance: the supervisor should not accompany the group. The Supervisor should, as a minimum, make personal contact, such as meeting up or via phone, with the group at least once each day of the journey. If it is considered essential that an adult accompany the group, he or she must not interfere with the group’s decisions or purpose, unless safety is a concern, as this would detract from the essential independence, responsibility and challenge of this Section.

It is the responsibility of the Award Coordinators, on behalf of their Licensed Operator, to appoint Supervisors and ensure they are suitable.

Award Supervisors play a critical role ensuring the safety of Participants when undertaking their Adventurous Journeys.
