How I Made a Difference to My Community
Through Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award

A Story by Ben Luks

Faced with this question,
There was much I could mention.
So why not defy conventional norm
And write this answer in poetical form?

My Award journey began in 2002
When I realised that there was much I could do.
Through my involvement with Scouting,
I lead groups and organised many an outing.

I then saw a greater need that I could fill
And joined the Scouts’ Youth Advisory Council.
I met with Scouting’s senior management and presented my case
On how to grow the movement and expand its membership base.

To also serve my school, I was not hesitant.
I joined the Student Representative Council and became their President.
I helped raise money for charity and ran events for the school.
I raised students’ issues with the Principal.

By the time I reached Gold, I still wanted to give something back.
So I took a leadership position with a Cub Scout Pack.
I felt that an important contribution was made.
Teaching children skills like leadership and first aid.
With a Scout Jamboree coming, I volunteered to assist.
I took a job as a newspaper journalist.
Our paper informed the Scouts of guests appearing on stage.
My interview with Miss World Australia made the front page!

Through it all, I do believe I made a difference.
The Duke’s Award allowed me to be of community assistance.
But my love for service, I can clearly see.
For the Award made a significant impact on me.

We kindly thank Adelaide Airport and Adelaide Flight Training Centre for supporting the competition.
