The Making the Connection ProjectJames Gorman House Building in Albion

Is designed to empower youth from disadvantaged backgrounds via two linked strategies. These aim to enable young people to participate in and benefit from The Award, as well as to establish and strengthen the ties The VIC State Award Office has with their supporting ‘non mainstream’ organisations. The focus of the project is on two types of disadvantaged young people.

  • Focus 1: Youth with medical illness
  • Focus 2: Youth disengaged from mainstream education.

The major barrier to participation for organisations and young people within these two focus categories to date have been access to funding to help support their involvement.

This barrier is not limited to Award related operation and administration fees but also extends to being realistically able to complete The Award’s relevant sections. This includes costs associated with Adventurous Journey equipment hire and access to suitable leaders. Award related activity travel cost, as well as other out of pocket expenses relating to the service, skill and fitness section that these young people have no way of funding themselves.

Working with Juvenile Justice

Port Phillip Prison are continuing to run The Award. The greatest difficulty in this area is trying to keep young people involved in The Award once they are no longer with the orgnaisation that they commenced with.
